Companies all across the U.S. (and the globe for that matter) are cutting down their headcounts by utilizing massive layoffs.
Even if your job is spared, it’s never quite the same as it used to be. You’re working more, stressing more, and you don’t see all of the familiar faces that you’ve come to know throughout the years. On top of all of that, there is a tremendous amount of guilt that you were spared and some of your most beloved colleagues weren’t.
I found an article by the L.A. Times which states some of the other effects of a massive layoff that can last 6 years. That’s the better part of a decade! You can check it out here: Surviving a layoff can hurt too
Are there any Survivors out there? How are you coping?

Not a survivor as such, but because of falling pupil numbers, my school needed to lose a teacher last year. One of the other teacher’s took an early retirement…and the gap there is with one teacher down is immense. I can’t imagine what it must be like if whole swathes of people go.

I’m on the cusp really…there have been a bunch of cuts around my office, myself included, except I’ve been kept on a freelance basis. Odd to see both sides of the coin. I’m gutted but glad, tense and hopeful all at once.
My company’s only done a few minor layoffs, none that are in my particular office or will effect me.
However, a coworker is leaving for another job and we’re not allowed to hire to fill the vacant position, which means more work for me. At the same time, mandatory furloughs, so I’m losing 80 hours in total, which amasses to $1,000+. It’s a crappy situation, but I’m hanging on though I have a major feeling that this office just won’t be the same come next week when she departs.

Daisy – That’s always hard on the teachers when their class sizes get ginormous. I have several friends & family members in the education field and it’s hard enough as it is with just regular class sizes!
DMuffin – Sorry to hear about that. I’m glad they were able to keep you on at least as a freelancer for the time being. Hopefully you can find something more full-time soon!
MinD – Hiring freezes suck. It’s so hard on those that are stuck doing all the extra work and still losing $. I’ve been reading about it on your blog. Hopefully the situation gets better soon!
Only time will tell. I am resigned to the fact that there is nothing I can do to affect the outcome other than hold on AND WAIT. Wow, i’m really bummed out now…
